About Griffith Airport

Griffith Airport, also known as Griffith- Merritt Airport, is a public airport located in Rome, New York, United States. This airport serves Oneida County and the surrounding areas and is an important transportation hub for the region. It is owned by Oneida County and managed by the Griffiss International Airport Authority. With a rich history and strategic location, Griffith Airport plays a vital role in connecting the local community to the rest of the world.

The airport was originally established in 1942 as a training base for the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. It was known as Rome Army Air Base and served as a major training facility for bomber crews. After the war, the base was decommissioned and the land was transferred to the City of Rome. In 1959, the airport was reopened for civilian use and named after a local businessman, Griffith E. Merritt.

Griffith Airport covers an area of 467 acres and has two asphalt runways. Runway 15/33 is 7,406 feet long and 150 feet wide, while Runway 3/21 is 5,200 feet long and 100 feet wide. These runways can accommodate a wide range of aircraft, from small general aviation planes to larger commercial jets. The airport is equipped with modern navigational aids, such as GPS and VOR/DME, to ensure safe and efficient operations.

The airport offers a variety of services and amenities to passengers and pilots. There is a fixed-base operator (FBO) on-site that provides fueling, aircraft maintenance, and other services. The airport also has a terminal building with a waiting area, restrooms, and a pilot lounge. Additionally, there is ample parking for both cars and aircraft.

Griffith Airport serves as a gateway to the Mohawk Valley region of New York, offering convenient access to popular destinations such as Utica, Syracuse, and the Adirondack Mountains. The airport is located just a short drive from downtown Rome and is easily accessible from major highways, making it a convenient choice for travelers in the area.

In addition to commercial flights, Griffith Airport also supports general aviation activities, such as private flying, flight training, and aircraft maintenance. The airport is home to several aviation businesses, including flight schools and aircraft charter companies. It also hosts air shows, fly-ins, and other events throughout the year to promote aviation and engage with the local community.

Overall, Griffith Airport plays a crucial role in the economic development and connectivity of the Mohawk Valley region. It supports tourism, business travel, and general aviation, contributing to the growth and prosperity of the local community.
